Smart Watering Schedules for the Dry Season
Water scarcity doesn't have to mean a failed garden. Discover timing strategies and simple techniques that cut water usage by up to 40%.
Water in the morning, not midday
The single most effective change you can make is timing. Watering between 6 am and 9 am means the soil absorbs moisture before the heat evaporates it. Midday watering loses up to 40% to evaporation before it reaches the roots.
Mulch is your best tool
A 5 cm layer of dry grass, straw, or wood chips on the soil surface dramatically slows moisture loss. Mulched beds need watering roughly half as often as bare soil. It also suppresses weeds that compete for the same water.
Water deeply, not frequently
Shallow daily watering encourages roots to stay near the surface where they're vulnerable to heat. Instead, water deeply every 2–3 days so roots grow downward where the soil stays cooler and moister.
Simple drip setup
- Run a soaker hose or perforated pipe along the base of your plants
- Connect to a simple gravity-fed tank or tap
- Drip irrigation uses up to 60% less water than overhead sprinklers
Know your crops
Tomatoes and peppers need consistent moisture — irregular watering causes blossom end rot. Leafy greens like sukuma wiki are more forgiving but bolt quickly if they dry out completely. Root vegetables like carrots prefer drier surface soil with deep moisture below.
